Usually, when a child receives a tube of toothpaste as a present from a stranger,   it’s
not much cause for excitement. Thanks to Madeline Ginzburg, DMD, that’s not the
case at the Life and Hope Association Orphanage in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

Dr. Ginzburg, a general dentist practicing in Bronx County, was quick to respond when
a patient mentioned he would be traveling on a mission to villages in Cambodia that
were medically underserved.  In fact, this was enough information to trigger a
charitable frenzy in Dr. Ginzburg’s Riverdale office.  Dental hygiene supplies were
gathered from operatories. Cupboards and drawers were emptied of toothpaste and any
hygiene products that would help the children in Cambodia.

When asked about her donation, Dr. Ginzburg said, “When a patient asks me to help
with a charitable cause, I try. This time, I could make more than a monetary
contribution; I was able to fill an actual need. We all know the complications that arise
from untreated caries and periodontal disease. The simplest step is to start with oral
hygiene.”

Dr. Ginzburg is a working mom with three children in college. When she first opened
her practice, Dr. Ginzburg was one of the first woman dentists in Riverdale. Now, all
these years later, her dental practice includes six other women dentists and four
hygienists.  It’s not unusual to find her in the dental office seven days a week. She
served as chairperson of the NYSDA Council on Dental Education and Licensure for
the last two years and is the director of the NYSDF’s Mentor Program.

Dr. Ginzburg’s ability to make a difference certainly extends beyond the confines of a
dental chair.
